Gulangyu Island
If there’s one place that almost always makes people fall for Xiamen, it’s Gulangyu.
Just off the coast of Xiamen Island, Gulangyu is known for its pedestrian-only streets, old villas, sea views, and layered mix of local and international architectural styles. It was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2017, which helps explain why it feels so distinctive.
Why I’d recommend it:
It gives you the most iconic “Xiamen feeling” right away — coastal, walkable, historic, and a little romantic. It’s touristy, yes, but still worth it for a first visit.
What To Do In Gulangyu:
Get a little lost in the island’s quiet streets
Climb up to Sunlight Rock for the view
Visit Shuzhuang Garden and slow down for a bit
Stop for coffee or local snacks in between walks
Look out for the old architecture and small details everywhere
Stay for sunset if you can. The island feels especially calm later in the day
